Railway Network Introduced by the British Government for Transport Tea and Coffee from Hill country to Colombo.

First Sod of the SLR was cut by Sir Henry Ward (1858 August 3).Between Maradana & Dematagoda
1864
First Steam train engine imported to Sri Lanka (1864-01-14) "Lieopold"
1864 First Railway Bridge was made over the kelany river   (1863-1864)

First Train Service begin from Colombo, Henarathgoda (Gampaha) to Abepussa.(1864 December 27) - 54Km
1864 First Train driver -G.L.Molswath
1865 First Train accident (near Hunupitiya(Mahara)   36 passengers were killed 1865-01-14
1865 First passenger train  from Colombo to Ambepussa (1865-10-02)  84 passengers   
1866   First mail service train started  (1866-01-01)
1866   Extension was made to Polgahawela
